The New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland (NERHP), a joint venture of Maine Medical center and Healthsouth, LLC, is the only free standing acute rehabilitation hospital in Maine. Since 1986, we have been providing quality inpatient and outpatient physical rehabilitation services. Our results-oriented
therapy programs help people improve their level of function and reclaim their role in the community, at home and at work. NERHP is Joint Commission accredited
and licensed by the State of Maine.
NERHP provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient medical rehabilitation to patients with stroke, brain injury,
cardiac, pulmonary, spinal cord injury, amputation, and other neuro-muscular impairments. Our primary function is to provide
diagnostic and treatment services to people requiring physical rehabilitation in order to achieve their highest level of independence in the home and the community.
NERHP's Mission Statement
The mission of NERHP is to provide individuals with guidance, education, support, and motivation while helping them achieve maximum independence and function. Our professionals work with the patient and family through a team approach, to establish and implement an individualized rehabilitation plan designed to meet specific patient goals.
Philosophy
The philosophy of NERHP is the following:
- We provide quality care to all our patients in a caring, professional and ethical manner.
- We are committed to meeting the changing needs of our patients, families and the community for the benefit of all.
- We value our employees and volunteers as an integral part of our success, and build upon their strengths.
- We encourage participation from our patients, employees, volunteers and the community in the management process.
- We strive to be recognized as the community advocate for the disabled of Maine.
Code of Ethical Conduct
Recognizing our responsibility to the community we serve, NERHP takes seriously the mandate of all who are part of the institution to act in
a manner that reflects the commitment to ethical behavior to which we dedicate ourselves. A uniform standard of care, respect for the patient,
confidentiality, fair business practices and processes to deal with resolving ethical dilemmas are responsibilities which we take seriously and promote
in our Code of Ethical Conduct and in our policies which support and promote these standards.
We are dedicated to following our Code of Ethical Conduct and the policies that support the following standards:
Ethics Committee
This committee is in place to consider and assist in the resolution of unusual, complicated ethical problems and issues arising from the
care and treatment of patients within the rehabilitation setting. The Ethics Committee attempts to assure that the human rights of patients and/or
family members and staff are considered and protected in all clinical research and treatments in the institution. In the event of
any unresolved or complicated issues, any team member, patient or family member can contact the chair of the Ethics
Committee at 879-8521 to request a consult.
