    Stephanie Ruel
Stephanie Ruel, age 43, from Scarborough had an intracerebral hemorrhage (stroke) while at home in October of 2006. Her teenage daughter called 911 for help. Stephanie was admitted to MMC with significant seizure activity, had a craniotomy, intubated and developed pneumonia and respiratory failure. The initial prognosis was quite grim. Upon transfer to NERHP as an inpatient she had to learn to walk, regain cognition and care for herself through in-depth physical, occupational, speech, neuro and nursing therapies. Stephanie remained at NERHP as an inpatient from October 23 through December, 2006. Upon discharge, she continued her rehabilitation through NERHP's outpatient therapy department to address balance, attention and memory issues.

"Stephanie made excellent gains in all therapies," states Susie Kelly, her occupational therapist who nominated Stephanie for a National Rehab Week patient award 2007. "Her strength and courage and obvious love for her family all played into Stephanie's recovery."

Today Stephanie is driving, maintaining household responsibilities and parenting. She credits her gains to the strong family support she receives from her husband, two children, her mom and friends.
